Element Definition
Transportation infrastructure (rivers) is defined as navigable rivers and waterways used for commercial or industrial transportation. For this element, rivers include only waterway segments identified in authoritative federal or state datasets as navigable or commercially utilized waterways at the time of data compilation. Non-navigable streams, drainage ditches, and intermittent waterways not designated for navigation are not included.
Mapped Feature Description
This element is displayed as linear and polygon features representing the mapped centerlines and extents of navigable rivers and waterways in Illinois. Feature geometry reflects the spatial representation provided in the source datasets at the time of publication. The map does not depict channel depth, seasonal navigability, lock and dam infrastructure, traffic volume, or water quality conditions.
