Injection Zone Depth

Element Definition

Injection zone depth is defined as the vertical distance from land surface to the top of the designated CO₂ injection interval within a geologic storage formation. For this element, injection zone depth is derived from subsurface stratigraphic interpretations that identify the depth to the top of the target injection formation using well data and regional geologic models. Only formations identified as potential CO₂ storage reservoirs are included. For example, the top of the Mt. Simon Sandstone is used for the Mt. Simon Injection Zone Depth, and the top of the Galena Dolomite is used as a proxy for the St. Peter Injection Zone Depth.

Mapped Feature Description

This element is displayed as a continuous subsurface raster representing the depth to the top of the CO₂ injection zone across Illinois. Values reflect interpolated depths derived from well control and geologic interpretation at the time of publication. The map does not depict formation thickness, porosity, permeability, pressure, temperature, or the depth of the base of the injection interval.
