Confining Unit Thickness

Element Definition

Confining unit thickness is defined as the vertical thickness of the primary geologic confining unit that overlies a designated CO₂ storage reservoir. For this element, confining unit thickness includes the interpreted thickness of regionally continuous low-permeability formations identified as confining units based on stratigraphic correlations and subsurface data. Only confining units associated with formations identified as potential CO₂ storage reservoirs are included.

Mapped Feature Description

This element is displayed as a continuous subsurface raster representing the thickness of the primary confining unit above the CO₂ storage reservoir across Illinois. Values reflect interpreted thickness derived from well control and regional geologic models at the time of publication. The map does not depict seal lithology, permeability, capillary entry pressure, lateral continuity, faulting, or geomechanical properties.
