Sole source aquifer areas are defined as geographic areas designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Section 1424(e) of the Safe Drinking Water Act as relying on a single aquifer system for at least 50 percent of their drinking water supply and for which no reasonably available alternative drinking water source exists. For this element, sole source aquifer areas include only areas with an official EPA designation in effect at the time of data compilation.
