Federally Owned Lands

Element Definition

Federally owned land is defined as land parcels for which the United States federal government holds ownership or administrative responsibility. For this element, federally owned land includes parcels identified in authoritative federal land-ownership or land-management datasets as being managed by federal agencies. Lands under private ownership, state ownership, or local ownership are not included.

Mapped Feature Description

This element is displayed as polygon features representing the surface boundaries of federally owned land in Illinois. The polygons reflect administrative land boundaries as recorded in the source datasets at the time of publication. The map does not depict surface-use restrictions, subsurface mineral ownership, lease status, or agency-specific management plans beyond the administrative boundary.
