Many play element datasets were combined into an integrated geospatial database that is the basis of the play-based exploration exercise. Play-based exploration uses, and adds value to, existing subsurface data that exists as part of the Illinois State Geological Survey repositories or developed through numerous site-specific to regional-scale studies the survey has completed. Land surface data and societal data were also gathered from public sources.
An integrated geospatial database, built and populated with all available data is the foundational knowledge base required to facilitate the play-based exploration. To better understand the spatial distribution of carbon storage potential and suitability in Illinois, we compiled datasets relevant to subsurface geology and hydrology, surface infrastructure, and societal considerations.

About Suitability Classifications
Suitability classifications are informed but ultimately subjective judgments applied to play element data. The criteria used for the maps on this website are based on literature, discussions, and feedback. Different stakeholders may prefer more or less permissive criteria than those applied here. To support this, the project geodatabase is available for download so stakeholders can follow the workflow and apply their own suitability classifications.
Using Suitability Maps
The maps shown here represent a snapshot in time. As new site-specific data are collected or regulations change, suitability classifications may shift—making a site appear more suitable or less suitable.

| Less Suitable | Areas where conditions could make carbon storage projects more difficult to develop or less likely to succeed. Projects here could face greater technical, environmental, regulatory, or social challenges. |
| Suitable | Areas that meet the basic requirements for carbon storage projects but may have some limitations. Additional studies would be needed to confirm their potential. |
| More Suitable | Areas that appear favorable for carbon storage projects based on available information, though not as ideal as “most suitable” areas. They still present good opportunities worth further evaluation. |
| Most Suitable | Areas where current information strongly supports that conditions are highly favorable for carbon storage projects. These sites are the best candidates for further study and potential development. |
| More Information Needed | Areas where not enough data are currently available to make a judgment. These locations may become more or less suitable as new information is collected. |
